CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina women's basketball was named the top College Female Team of the year at the 50th Annual Mountain Amateur Athletic Club WNC Sports Award Banquet on Sunday night in Asheville, N.C. The awards banquet awards the top athletes and teams in the Western North Carolina area.
The Lady Catamounts posted one of the most successful seasons in school history and capped it off with a school-record 25 wins in 2007-08. Western Carolina picked up its first Top-25 win in school history when the squad defeated then No. 21/22 Louisville 77-72 at the Minnesota Subway Classic. The Lady Cats also got its first win in over Clemson, defeating the Tigers at home 62-53.
Western Carolina had three players eclipse the 1,000 point plateau for the firs first time in the program's history. Seniors Monique Dawson and Chevon Keith along with junior Lauren Powell each went over the century mark for scoring.
Head Coach Kellie Harper became the second-winningest coach in Western Carolina women's basketball history and currently has 76 victories in her four-year tenure. Harper also led her Lady Catamount squad to its fourth appearance in the Southern Conference Tournament finals in five years. The club has enjoyed post-season play in three of Harper's four-years at the helm of the program, twice to the WNIT and once to the NCAA Tournament.
Western Carolina's 15 Southern Conference victories ties the school record set by the club in 2006-07.
The squad's 1,521 rebounds for a season rank first for most rebounds by a Southern Conference team. Western Carolina's 2,518 points as a team ranks second in points scored for a single-season by a SoCon school.
Western Carolina loses four seniors from the 2007-08 squad in Dawson, Keith,
Ashley Pellom and
Jessika Johnson. The club brings back three starters for next season;
Lauren Powell,
Kendra Eaton and
Brooke Johnson and has a total of seven players returning. Western Carolina will welcome Jessica Jackson to the court in 2008-09 after she sat out the 2007-08 season after transferring to Western Carolina from South Florida. The Lady Cats will also have six freshman for next season: Diamond Hunnicutt (Landmark Christian/ Fairburn, Ga.), Kaila'Shea Menendez (Wakefield/Raleigh, N.C.), Brittany Ferguson (Westside/Macon, Ga.), Tonquishae Belcher (Concord/Concord, N.C.), Amanda Harshaw (Chamblee / Atlanta, Ga.) and Janae McKinney (Kendrick / Columbus, Ga.).
