Western Carolina Softball Hosts Presbyterian College Tuesday

Listen to Mollie Fowler and Lauren Ross talk about their grand-slam and no-hitter in the latest edition of Catamount Tracks HERE.

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball (9-30) host Presbyterian College (12-23) on Tuesday in a mid-week doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. at the Catamount Softball Complex.

It is the second meeting between the Catamounts and Blue Hose this season. Earlier in the year, Western Carolina traveled to Presbyterian College and was swept 7-6, 8-4.

Western Carolina is coming off a 1-2 performance this past weekend against Southern Conference foe College of Charleston. Junior hurler Lauren Ross was near perfection tossing a no-hitter in the opening game of the three-game slate with the Cougars. The Catamount offense was also clicking on all cylinders as junior Beth Hauser belted a two run shot in the first inning and redshirt sophomore Mollie Fowler hit a grand-slam.

However, the Catamounts couldn't maintain the potent offense they put together in the 8-0 win against College of Charleston in the first game. Western Carolina dropped the last two games with equal scores of 9-2.

Western Carolina has enjoyed success with the long ball as of late though. After hitting just one homerun in the first 26 games of the season, a solo shot by Fowler, the Catamounts have hit 10 homeruns in the last 13 games. The club has also had a grand-slam in the last two Southern Conference series.

Freshman second baseman Amber Hawkins continues to lead the club with a .283 batting average. Senior Jamie Swank tops the club in hits with 31 while Fowler leads the club in homeruns (six) and RBI (24).

Junior Stephanie Beatty and Ross are each chasing the career RBI record. The pair each has 72 RBI in their career and look to top former Catamount Savannah Filley who had 78.

In the pitching ranks, Ross moved into second place for innings pitched with 225. She has 77 strikeouts this season and needs 23 to secure back-to-back 100 strikeout seasons.

Western Carolina heads back out on the road Wednesday when the Catamounts travel to Winston-Salem State. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
