UAA Seawolf Hockey Signs Pair of Skaters for 2008-09

Curtis Leinweber and Tyler Moir join the Seawolves.

April 16, 2008

ANCHORAGE, AK - University of Alaska Anchorage head hockey coach Dave Shyiak announced today the signing of Curtis Leinweber (Calgary, Alberta) and Tyler Moir (Calgary, Alberta) to National Letters of Intent to play for the Seawolves in 2008-09.

The incoming duo combined to score 135 points this past season in the Alberta Junior Hockey League, while helping lead their respective teams to second and third-place finishes in the AJHL South Division.

Leinweber (5-8, 170) tallied 22-38--60 scoring totals in 61 regular-season games for the Okotoks Oilers this past season, ending the year third overall on the team in points and tied for fourth in goals. The Oilers' top-scorer on the power play with 10 goals, Moir also netted five game winners while helping guide Okotoks to a 45-11-1-5 record. The 20-year-old Leinweber played three seasons with the Okotoks club, registering 29 points in 68 total games his first two years with the Oilers.

A converted defenseman last season, Leinweber would have officially led the league in points by a defenseman, however he played a handful of games at forward. Shyiak said Leinweber will play as a defenseman at UAA.

"Curtis skates very well and is intelligent at moving the puck up ice," Shyiak said. "He was very effective on the power play in juniors and we are hoping he can make that transition to his college game."

Moir led the Drumheller Dragons in scoring and ranked eighth overall in the AJHL with 75 points last season, including tallying a team-best 26 goals and 49 assists in 54 regular-season games. The 6-0, 200-pound forward netted a team-high 13 power-play goals, notched two game-winning scores and finished second in penalty minutes with 216. Drumheller's leading scorer during the playoffs with 15 points in 11 outings, Moir (19) played his first two seasons of junior hockey with the Drayton Valley Thunder of the AJHL, netting a combined 30 points in 91 games.

"Tyler is a hard-nosed physical forward who is effective on the forecheck and strong along the boards," said Shyiak. "He has those intangibles coaches like in a player in that he competes with an edge. He will be a solid addition to our team."

Shyiak said he is likely to add a few more players over the summer.

Leinweber, Moir and the rest of the Seawolves open the 2008-09 season at home Oct. 10-11 as they host Connecticut, Northeastern and Alaska Fairbanks at the Kendall Hockey Classic.
