DENVER - Two-time national coach of the year George Gwozdecky has announced that David Carle (Anchorage, Alaska), Joe Colborne (Calgary, Alberta), Nate Dewhurst (Johnston, Iowa) and Stepan Novotny (Prague, Czech Republic) have signed National Letters of Intent to attend the University of Denver and play hockey. The foursome joins defenseman John Lee (Moorhead, Minn.) as student-athletes who have signed NLI's for the Pioneers.
Carle helped Shattuck-St. Mary's to the USA Hockey Tier I Under-18 national championship this season. The 6-1, 185-pound skilled defenseman tallied 45 points on 10 goals and 35 assists in 55 games for the Sabres, who defeated Team Illinois 5-1 in the championship game and finished the season 42-11-3. Carle tallied six points on three goals and three assists in the national tournament. He is the son of Bob and Karen Carle, and brother of former Pioneer All-American and current San Jose Sharks defenseman Matt Carle.
Colborne recently was named the 2008 playoff most valuable player of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. The high-scoring forward led the Camrose Kodiaks to their second consecutive AJHL title by leading all playoff scorers with 16 points on eight goals and eight assists. The 6-foot-5, 195-pound Colborne led the Kodiaks to the AJHL regular-season title by leading the league in scoring with 90 points on 33 goals and 47 assists in 55 games. Colborne and the Kodiaks seek their second consecutive Doyle Cup championship in a best-of-seven series against British Columbia Hockey League champion Penticton. He is the son of Paul and Janice Colborne.
Dewhurst netted 14 points on nine goals and five assists for the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound forward added four power-play goals and two game-winning goals for Buccaneers. Dewhurst was a member of the U.S. Under-18 Select Team that finished fifth at the 2007 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament in Hodonin, Czech Republic. Dewhurst tallied two goals in Team USA's 5-3 win over Slovakia. He is the son of Scott and Jana Dewhurst.
