COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Forward Zach Parise (Minneapolis, Minn./New Jersey Devils) and defenseman Paul Martin (Minneapolis, Minn./New Jersey Devils) have been added to the roster for the U.S. Men's National Team, it was announced today by USA Hockey.
Parise, who led the National Hockey League's New Jersey Devils with 65 points (32-23) in 2007-08, joins the U.S. Men's National Team for the third time, while Martin, who led the Devils' defensive corps with 32 points (5-27), will compete in his second IIHF World Championship.
With two gold medals in international competition, Parise has represented the United States on five previous occasions. He earned gold with the U.S. National Junior Team at the 2004 IIHF World Junior Championship and with the U.S. National Under-18 Team at the 2002 IIHF World Under-18 Championship. He has also competed in two IIHF Men's World Championships (2005, 2007) and the 2003 IIHF World Junior Championship.
Martin has represented the United States in international competition on four previous occasions. He skated for Team USA at the 2005 IIHF Men's World Championship, World Cup of Hockey 2004, 2004 Deutschland Cup and 2001 IIHF World Junior Championship.
The U.S. Men's National Team will compete at the 2008 IIHF World Championship in Quebec City, Quebec, and Halifax, Nova Scotia, May 2-18. USA Hockey also announced today Paul Gaustad (Fargo, N.D./Buffalo Sabres), who was previously announced as a member of Team USA, will not be on the roster due to medical reasons.
NOTES: Team USA will conduct a training camp from April 24-30 in Portland and Falmouth, Maine, including a pre-tournament game against Sweden on Sunday, April 27, at 7 p.m. (EDT) at the Cumberland County Civic Center. John Tortorella, head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, is the head coach of the 2008 U.S. Men's National Team. Mike Sullivan, assistant coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Kurt Kleinendorst, head coach of the Lowell Devils of the American Hockey League, will serve as assistant coaches for Team USA . All 56 games from the 2008 IIHF Men's World Championship will be broadcast live on WCSN.com. The 2008 U.S. Men's National Team is under the direction of Jim Johannson and a four-member advisory group, including NHL general managers Brian Burke (Anahiem), David Poile (Nashville), Ray Shero (Pittsburgh) and Don Waddell (Atlanta). Tony Rossi, vice president of USA Hockey and its international council chair, oversees all aspects of international competition for USA Hockey.
