VERONA, Wis. -- Alannah McCready recorded her third career shutout and senior Jinelle Zaugg scored her 80th career goal as the No. 5 Wisconsin women's hockey team (22-7-2, 18-5-2 WCHA) defeated Bemidji State (4-24-3, 1-22-2) 3-0 at the Eagles Nest Ice Arena on Saturday afternoon.
McCready (Blaine, Minn.), who has recorded a shutout in all three career games she has started, improves her career record to 2-0-1. The sophomore goaltender stopped all 12 shots she faced while Bemidji State's Emily Brookshaw made 39 saves on 42 Wisconsin's shots.
The Badgers notched their first goal of the game just 1:06 into the first period. Sophomore Meghan Duggan (Danvers, Mass.) gathered the puck in the Wisconsin zone and passed it to freshman Mallory Deluce (London, Ontario) who then streaked into the Bemidji State zone before giving it up for Zaugg who scored her 80th career goal. Zaugg, who has scored in two consecutive games for the Badgers, is now just four goals shy of UW's career record held by Meghan Hunter.
Just over four minutes later Wisconsin went up 2-0 on Mikka Nordby's (Watford City, N.D.) first goal of the season and second of her career. Sophomore Jasmine Giles (Ottawa, Ontario) won the face-off just outside the blue line and sent it back to Alycia Matthews (Castlegar, British Columbia). Matthews passed it to Nordby who fired a slapshot from the blue line right past Brookshaw lighting the lamp at 5:35 of the opening period.
The Badgers added another goal midway through the third period and extended their lead to 3-0. This time it was Duggan scoring her 15th goal of the season. Jinelle Zaugg and Mallory Deluce were credited with assists on the goal which came at 10:39 of the final stanza.
The Badgers finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play compared to Bemidji State who went 0-for-2.
Wisconsin is back in action next weekend as they travel north to
Minneapolis to face Golden Gophers Feb. 23-24 in the Border Battle.
