Keys Scores Twice as Seniors Lead Ohio State to 4-0 Win vs. Minnesota State

Senior Buckeyes factor into all four goals; Bonanno and Mauch combine for shutout in home finale

Feb. 16, 2008

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Three senior Buckeyes recorded two points, led by forward Erin Keys with two goals, as the Ohio State women's hockey team defeated Minnesota State by a score of 4-0 Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink. Senior goaltender Jill Mauch combined with junior Liana Bonanno in the shutout as the Buckeyes completed their home schedule with a sweep of the Mavericks. The win improves Ohio State to 14-15-3 overall with a 9-14-3 record in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Minnesota State is 10-19-1 with a 9-16-1 conference mark.

After a scoreless first period, Keys scored both of her goals in the second to give the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes. On the first goal, senior defenseman Tessa Bonhomme shot the puck toward the MSU goal, with junior forward Hayley Klassen knocking it down it the slot. Keys jabbed in the deflection to put Ohio State on the board at 8:24.

The St. Paul, Minn., native followed with a second goal at 17:03, this time on the power play. Senior Mallory Peckels passed the puck from the center of the left circle up to classmate Lisa Chesson at the point. The defenseman fired it on goal with Keys knocking in the rebound for her 18th goal of the season.

In the third period, the Buckeyes built their lead to 3-0 at 7:36 when sophomore forward Colleen Olson scored her first career goal. Chesson fed the puck over from the lower left corner to Olson in front of the net, where she hit it into the upper left corner. The assist was Chesson's second of the game and 14th of the season for the assistant captain from Plainfield, Ill. Sophomore Raelyn LaRocque had the second assist on the goal, her fifth of the year.

Bonhomme put the game away at 11:07 when she scored unassisted on a wrist shot from the left side that sailed in top shelf. The captain from Sudbury, Ontario, recorded her 12th multiple-point game of the season with the goal and assist and increased her point total to 37.

After Bonhomme's goal, Minnesota State called a timeout. Upon the return, Mauch entered the net in replacement for Bonanno. Mauch made three saves in the final 8:53 to secure the shutout. Bonanno had 20 saves during her 51:07 in net and picked up the win as the two combined for Ohio State's third shutout of the season. She is 11-11-3 this season.

Overall, the Buckeyes had a 37-23 advantage in shots. They were 1-of-4 on the power play and a perfect 8-of-8 on the penalty kill.
