Minnesota Extends Nation's Best Unbeaten Streak to 19 Games with Feb. 8-9

WCHA Sweep over OSU; Minnesota State Wins Twice vs BSU; SCSU Takes Three Points from UND; UMD Splits with UW

Feb. 10, 2008

MADISON, Wis. - The country's hottest Div. 1 women's hockey team - the No. 4-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers - extended their nation's best unbeaten streak to 19 games over the Feb. 8-9 weekend with a pair of Western Collegiate Hockey Association victories over visiting Ohio State, 7-3 and 5-1, to move with five points of league-leading Minnesota Duluth. Minnesota (23-4-3, 19-4-1 WCHA) does, however, have two games in hand.

The No. 3-ranked UMD Bulldogs (25-4-1, 22-4-0 WCHA), meanwhile, split a two-game set with visiting and No. 5-ranked Wisconsin (21-7-2, 17-5-2 WCHA) this past Friday and Saturday, falling 3-2 on Feb. 8 and then winning 3-2 on Feb. 9. Minnesota Duluth, which saw it's 16-game win streak end, also claimed the regular season series against the Badgers, 3-1-0, and have outscored their league opponents, 110-40, so far in 2007-08. Two-time defending WCHA and NCAA champion Wisconsin, which saw its 10-game victory streak end, is eight points behind UMD and three points back of UM.

In the two other WCHA series contested over the weekend, Minnesota State (10-17-1, 9-14-1 WCHA) extended their league winning streak to four games with 3-1 and 5-2 wins over visiting Bemidji State, while St. Cloud State (16-9-5, 11-9-4 WCHA) took home a 2-2 (ot) tie and 2-1 win from North Dakota (4-23-5, 4-19-3 WCHA). The Mavericks, despite being seven points back of SCSU, thus remain in contention for the final first round home WCHA Playoff berth as four games remain for both clubs.

Looking ahead to next weekend - Feb. 15-16 - there will be three league series contested as Minnesota and St. Cloud State go home-and-home, Wisconsin hosts Bemidji State, Minnesota State heads to Ohio State. Both Minnesota Duluth and North Dakota will be idle.
