Feb. 23, 2008

BEMIDJI, Minn. - Senior Erin Keys scored a hat trick and a total of 11 Buckeyes had a point as the Ohio State women's hockey team defeated Bemidji State by a score of 6-3 Friday at John Glas Fieldhouse in Bemidji, Minn. The win was Ohio State's third in a row as it moves to 15-15-3 overall with a 10-14-3 record in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The Beavers are 4-26-3 and 1-24-2 in the conference.

Along with the three goals by Keys, junior forward Morgan Marziali also had three points on a career-high three assists. Senior defenseman Tessa Bonhomme had two assists and junior forward Hayley Klassen had a goal and assist.

Bemidji State scored twice to go up 2-0 before the Buckeyes cut the lead to 2-1 heading into the first intermission. The Beavers got on the board first at 8:53 when Jessica Pullar tucked in the rebound off a shot by Erin Cody. Cody then scored on the power play at 11:44 to give BSU the 2-0 lead.

Ohio State cut the lead to 2-1 before heading into the break. Keys scored from the right side during a scramble in front of the net at 14:30. The St. Paul, Minn., native was assisted by fellow seniors Mallory Peckels and Lisa Chesson. Despite trailing by a goal, the Buckeyes had a 20-8 advantage in shots in the first.

The score remained 2-1 until the Buckeyes scored three times in the last five minutes of the second to pull ahead 4-2. Rookies Teal Bishop and Jenna Kilpatrick connected on a goal at 15:41 to knot the score at 2-all. Bishop brought the puck up the ice from the OSU zone and dumped it to Kilpatrick in the slot. She backhanded it in for her third goal of the season, while Bishop notched her seventh assist.

As the final minute was ticking away, Ohio State scored twice in an eight-second span for its first lead. While on the power play, freshman Shannon Reilly passed the puck to Bonhomme at the right circle, who fired it across to Keys waiting at the left doorstep. She jabbed it in for her second goal at 19:32. At 19:40, senior Jody Heywood followed with a goal of her own, putting in the rebound off a shot by Marziali, for her second lamplighter of the year.

Ohio State built on its lead in the opening minutes of the third when Keys completed her hat trick at 3:56. Closing in on the Beaver net, Bonhomme fired the puck on net, followed by a shot by Marziali. Keys knocked in the rebound from the right side for her second career hat trick.

Pullar scored for the Beavers at 10:10 to cut the score to 5-3. She batted in the loose puck from the right side of the slot for second goal of the game.

With time winding down, the Beavers pulled goaltender Emily Brookshaw while on the power play for a 6-on-4 advantage. While bringing the puck into the zone, sophomore defenseman Rachel Davis poked it away from a BSU player and Marziali sent it up to Klassen who shot it across the ice and into the open net to seal the win at 6-4. It was her second shorthanded goal this season and 13th goal overall.

For the game, Ohio State had a 44-25 advantage in shots. The Buckeyes were 2-of-4 on the power play while Bemidji State was 1-of-4.

Keys' hat trick increased her season goal total to 21, the sixth-highest in a season in OSU history. She leads the team with 42 points for only the seventh 40-point season by a Buckeye. Bonhomme, the team captain from Sudbury, Ontario, is second with 39 points. Her 26 assists tie for the fifth in a season.

Klassen, of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, has 29 points to rank third on the team and her 13 goals are tied for second. Marziali, a native of St. Mary's, Ontario, is tied with Peckels and Chesson for fourth with 23 points. Reilly also reached the 20-point mark with her assist and has 15 helpers this year.

The Buckeyes will conclude their 2007-08 regular season when they face Bemidji State at 2:07 p.m. (CT) Saturday. Ohio State's first round WCHA playoff opponent, place and game times will be determined following the game.
