Mankato, Minn. - The Minnesota State University women's hockey team earned a 3-2 victory over the University of North Dakota in a game that saw 140 penalty minutes between the two teams. On a weekend where the team is celebrating the seniors, four seniors tallied six points.
The Mavericks got out to a 2-0 lead with a goal in the first and second period. Freshman forward Nina Tikkinen scored her fourth goal of the season on the power-play at 13:54 of the first period. Seniors Jodi Helminen and Amanda Stohr were credited with the helpers.
Senior forward Lindsay Macy gave MSU a two-goal lead at 11:58 of the second period. She was assisted by senior forward Kristina Bunker and sophomore defenseman Holly Snyder.
UND cut the lead to one at 5:48 of the third period on a power play goal from Kelly Lewis.
At 8:29 of the third period, the second brawl of the game broke out, resulting in game misconducts for sophomore Christina Lee and freshman Lisa Edman of the Mavericks and Nikki Hebert and Kelsey Fletcher of North Dakota.
Bunker scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at 17:53 of the third period on the power-play. She was assisted by Helminen and sophomore forward Ashley Young.
North Dakota got within one at 19:46 of the third period, using the extra attacker from a pulled goalie.
Senior goaltender Britni Kehler made 25 saves in her 11th win of the season.
MSU outshot UND, 28-27. The Mavericks went 2-7 on the power-play and North Dakota went 1-9.
Minnesota State (11-19-1, 10-16-1 WCHA) hosts the University of North Dakota on Saturday at 3:07 to complete the 2007-08 regular season.
