Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota, Wisconsin, St. Cloud State One Win from Berth in WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF

The four top-seeds in the first round of the WCHA Playoffs - No. 1 Minnesota Duluth, No. 2 Minnesota, No. 3 Wisconsin and No. 4 St. Cloud State - all won the first games of their best-of-3 series on Friday (Feb. 29) to move within one victory of a berth in the 2008 WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF, set for March 8-9 at the Duluth Entertainment & Convention Center (DECC).

The league-champion Bulldogs (28-4-1) had points from 12 players, including a pair of goals from right winger Emmanuelle Blais, a shorthanded game-winning goal and two assists from left winger Laura Fridfinnson, and a goal and an assist from center Saara Tuominen enroute to a 6-0 victory over No. 8 seed Bemidji State (4-28-3) before 475 at the DECC.

The host Golden Gophers (26-5-4) defeated No. 7 seed North Dakota (4-25-6), 3-1, on Friday evening before 574 at Ridder Arena as center Gigi Marvin notched the game-winning goal and added two assists, center Bobbi Ross had two goals and Kim Hanlon had 14 saves. For UND, left winger Jodi Holland had a third period goal.

In Madison, a Kohl Center crowd of 1,546 saw host Wisconsin (25-7-3) double up on No. 6 seed Minnesota State (11-20-2), 4-2, behind a goal and assist from right winger Meghan Duggan, a second period game-winner from right winger Hilary Knight and 17 saves from Jessie Vetter. For the Mavericks, center Amanda Stohr and right winger Brittany Mackley scored third period goals to pull them within one at 3-2.

And at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, the host SCSU Huskies (17-13-5) took game one from No. 5 seed Ohio State (16-16-3), 4-2, before 214 as left winger Meaghan Pezon had two goals and an assist, center Laura Fast netted the eventual game-winner at 13:51 of the third, and Kendall Newell had 31 saves. For the Buckeyes, right winger Erin Keys and defenseman Tessa Bonhomme scored goals.

The four first round playoff winners will advance to the 2008 WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF, set for Saturday, March 8 and Sunday, March 9 at the Duluth Entertainment & Convention Center. Tickets for the WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF are still available via the UMD Ticket Office at (218) 726-8595.
