MADISON, Wisc. - Ohio State senior defenseman Tessa Bonhomme won two individual awards and leads the Western Collegiate Hockey Association women's all-conference team, it was announced Wednesday (March 5). Bonhomme, a senior from Sudbury, Ont, was named the WCHA Player of the Year and was chosen WCHA Defensive Player of the Year in a vote of the eight league coaches.
The Buckeyes' captain was also named to the all-conference first team. She was the top scoring defenseman in the league with 12 goals and 24 assists for 36 points in 28 WCHA games. Only Haley Irwin, Minnesota Duluth's freshman who won the scoring championship with 43 points and Minnesota's Gigi Marvin who had 38 points scored more than Bonhomme.
Irwin, a Thunder Bay, Ontario native who helped lead Minnesota Duluth to the WCHA title, Marvin, a junior, and Ohio State senior Erin Keys and Wisconsin's Meghan Duggan were voted the 2007-08 all-league forwards. (Keys and Duggan tied for third among voters) while Minnesota junior Rachael Drazan and Bonhomme are the All-WCHA defenseman and Wisconsin junior Jessie Vetter and Minnesota Duluth's Kim Martin tied in the vote for all-league goalie. Irwin, who was also voted rookie of the year, had 18 goals and 25 assists and helped UMD to its third conference championship.
Marvin, a forward from Warroad, Minn., led the conference in goals with 26 goals and joins Vetter and Bonhomme as repeaters on the first team all-league team. Marvin was the WCHA rookie of the year in 2005-06.
Keys, a senior from St. Paul, Minn., scored 18 goals and had 34 points for the Buckeyes while Duggan, the rookie of the year last season, had 15 goals and 29 points in an injury-plagued season for the third place Badgers.
Drazan, a junior from Orono, Minn., had 10 goals, 17 assists for 27 points and joins Bonhomme, the second all-time career scoring leader for WCHA defenseman, as an all-league defender.
Vetter, from Cottage Grove, Wis., and Martin, a sophomore from Stockholm, Sweden, tied for first team all-league goalie honors. Vetter won the statistical award of 2007-08 WCHA Goaltending Champion. She had a 1.38 goals-against average and a save percentage of .928, in addition to a 19-5-2 record in league play. Martin had the league's best save percentage (.946). She also posted a 1.48 goals-against average and posted a 21-4-0 record.
Martin, Bonhomme and Marvin were also recently named a top 10 candidate for the 2008 Patty Kazmaier Award.
North Dakota's Casie Hanson has been named the Turfer WCHA Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year. A junior from St. Peter, Minn. Hanson is an alternate captain for the Fighting Sioux and finished fourth as the "Defensive Player of the Year" in a vote of league coaches. She scored seven goals with six assists for 13 points. Hanson is a two-time All-WCHA Academic Team member who has amassed a 3.96 grade point average while competing in two varsity sports. Hanson, a physical education major, also is an all-American and academic all-American in softball at UND.
The WCHA Coach of the Year is Minnesota's Brad Frost. Frost, in his first season with the Golden Gophers, led the team to a 27-5-4 overall record heading into the WCHA FINAL FACE-OFF and a 21-5-2 record in conference play. The Gophers lost just once in their last 24 games and finished in second place in the WCHA.
The conference head coaches, assistant coaches and sports information directors vote for the WCHA award winners. The WCHA Defensive Player of the Year Award was chosen by the head coaches, while the Turfer WCHA Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year was selected by the institutional faculty representatives.
