PENSACOLA, Fla. - Trailing 5-0, the Argos scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, and then had the tying run at the plate, but couldn't convert. Then, after the Chargers scored a run in the top of the ninth, the Argos loaded the bases, which again brought the tying run to the plate with only one out. However, Alabama Huntsville closer induced a double play ball to end the game.
West Florida starter Kyle Ramsey matched the Chargers starter Tom Longyear for the first three innings, until Alabama Huntsville put together four straight hits and scored three runs to take the lead. The Chargers added one in the fifth, and one in the top of the eighth inning to go up 5-0. The Argos finally got to Longyear in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Kyle Andrews doubled to centerfield. Then after a walk to Craig Westcott, Scott Beckwith was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Argos catcher Kevin Meirzwinski then singled to centerfield to score two runs. However, Chargers closer Jacob Wray came in to strike out Steven Bingert.
West Florida pounded out 10 hits, while the Chargers had 11 hits. Unfortunately, the Argos hits were more spread out, and they didn't get runners in scoring position with less than two outs until the eighth and ninth innings. Alabama Huntsville starter Longyear earned the win with 7 2/3 innings pitched, scattering 7 hits and striking out 7 batters. The Chargers Nick Huckaby had three hits and two RBI's to help Alabama Huntsville improve to 2-6 on the season.
West Florida lead off hitter Kyle Andrews reached base all five times, with four hits and a walk. Pron and Mierzwinski each had two hits, while Jackson Woodard and Brandon Brewer had the other Argo hits. Westcott and Andrews scored for UWF, while Mierzwinski had the two RBI's for West Florida. Andrews recorded his fifth stolen base of the young season, and has been a bright spot as a leadoff hitter during the Argos six game losing streak. West Florida is now 2-6 on the season, and will play against Flagler College on Saturday at 1:00 pm at Pelican Park.
