PENSACOLA, Fla. - West Florida Pitcher Billy Whitaker threw a one hit shutout with 11 strikeouts, as the Argos won 8-0, in the first game of Monday's Doubleheader vs. Miles College. The Argos scored four runs in the first inning and coasted to the victory, by pounding out 10 hits, including a home run by Scott Beckwith. Kevin Mierzwinski had a double, while Kyle Andrews legged out a triple.
Andrews led off the first inning with a walk, and stole second base. Then after a Kyle Brown walked, Craig Westcott drove in both runners with a single to centerfield. One out later, Scott Beckwith drilled a two run homer. West Florida added a single run in the second as Andrews tripled, and scored on a groundout.
Starting Pitcher Billy Whitaker allowed only three base runners, and just a lead off single in the fourth inning. Whitaker retired the side in order in each of the first three innings, until Miles College's leadoff hitter singled up the middle, to get the lone hit for the Golden Bears. Whitaker hit two batters, but all three base runners were stranded.
Andrews, Westcott, Beckwith, and Greg Pron each had two hits for West Florida, while Gregg Burkel and Mierzwinski had the other Argo hits. The two teams played the second game of the doubleheader immediately following the first game shutout. The win improved the Argos to 4-6 on the season, and put the winning streak at two games.
