PENSACOLA, Fla. - West Florida has now lost three straight games, following a seven game win streak in which they outscored their opponents 68-17. On Wednesday, the Argos dropped a day/night doubleheader by 4-2, and 8-7 scores, to the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri State. West Florida is now 9-9 on the season, while the Bearcats improved to 6-2 on the year, following their three game sweep of the Argos.
In the three game series, the Bearcats recorded 14 stolen bases, as a result of their aggressive baserunning from their speedy players. Meanwhile, Argonaut Centerfielder Kyle Andrews had the defensive play of the series, when he raced back to the centerfield wall, and made a leaping catch to rob an extra base hit form Northwest Missouri State. However, West Florida couldn't capitalize on the potential momentum changing catch and fell just one run short.
In game two of the days doubleheader, the Argos fell behind 8-3, then rallied with four runs, to close within 8-7 after the fifth inning. However, the final two innings were scoreless, and the Argos stranded the tying run at second base in the bottom of the seventh inning (Both games of the doubleheader were scheduled for seven innings).
Jon Reed drove in four runs, with two hits for West Florida, while Kroll, Steven Bingert, and Jimmy Boswell also had a pair of hits in the second game. The Bearcats scored two runs in the first inning and four in the third inning to take a 6-0 lead. West Florida answered with two runs in the bottom of the third, when Reed drilled a two run single, scoring Boswell and Andrews.
After NWMSU scored two more in the top of the fourth to go up 8-3, the Argos roared back with two in the fourth and two more in the fifth inning. In the fourth inning, Bingert lead off with a double, and Boswell singled, put runners on the corner. After Kyle Brown walked to load the bases, Reed connected on another two run single. In the fifth inning, Bingert tripled to score Greg Burkel, who had walked. Then Bingert scored on a ground out to make the score 8-7, but that was all the runs the Argos could muster.
West Florida remains at home for a three game series this weekend, with a doubleheader on Saturday, and a single game on Sunday, against Columbus State. The Argos are in the midst of a homestand that spans 17 games. They lost the first game of the homestand, then reeled off seven straight, before dropping the series to Northwest Missouri today.
