UWF Baseball Falls 6-5 to Delta State in Game Two Sunday

March 9, 2008

Box Score

CLEVELAND, Miss. - In the second game of Sunday's doubleheader, the Argos took a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the third inning, only to see the Statesmen tie the game with a four run inning. Then, Delta State used a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to break the tie. DSU needed three pitchers to hold UWF scoreless in the final three innings for the win.

The Argos out-hit the Statesmen in game two, by a 12-9 margin, but left the bases loaded in the seventh inning, and fell just one run short. Pitcher Kyle Ramsey pitched the final 3 1/3 innings for UWF, allowing only two hits, while striking out four. However, he allowed the fourth inning home run to take the tough luck loss to drop to 1-4 on the season.

West Florida jumped on the board first with two runs in the first inning. DSU answered with one in the bottom of the inning. The Argos scored three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 5-1 lead; however, the Statesmen scored four in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at five.

Steven Bingert went three for four at the plate, with three RBI's and two runs scored. Jimmy Boswell had two hits and two runs scored, while Gregg Burkel and Craig Westcott each had a pair of hits. Boswell and Bingert started the first inning rally with a single and a double and both scored. Then in the third inning, after Boswell singled, Bingert homered to give the Argos a 4-1 lead. UWF would add one more in the inning on an RBI single by Gregg Burkel. That would be all the scoring for UWF, despite loading the bases in the top of the seventh inning.

The loss dropped the Argos to 11-14 on the season, while Delta State improved to 16-4 on the year. West Florida will begin conference games next weekend at Montevallo, and the games will be broadcast on Stretch Internet. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for a 2:00 start time and will include a 9 inning game followed by a seven inning game. On Sunday, the two teams will play a nine inning game beginning at 1:00 pm.
