MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The defending GSC Champions, started the 2008 conference schedule on the road at Montevallo, and came out with the bats hot, and rolled out to a 10-0 lead in game one, and coasted to a 14-1 victory. Brandon Brewer belted a three run homer, his first of the season, and the Argos took advantage of Montevallo's inconsistent pitching. Meanwhile UWF starter Kyle Ramsey was outstanding, only allowing one hit over the first six innings.
Both Montevallo and West Florida were preseason top 40 teams, and the top two in the East Division of the Gulf South Conference, and interestingly matched up for a three game series to start conference play. The Argos scored a single run in the first inning, and then scored three runs in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings, capped by Brewer's three run homer.
Jimmy Boswell also connected on his first home run of the season to tack on an insurance run, which led to a four run seventh inning. West Florida pounded out 15 hits, while Montevallo only had four hits, with three of the hits coming in the final inning. A two out seventh inning home run ruined the chance for Ramsey to finish with a complete game shutout. Ramsey walked only one and struck out four, and improved to 2-4 on the season, with one of the best pitching performances of the season for UWF.
The two teams were set to play game two of the scheduled doubleheader at roughly 5:30 pm, and the final game of the three game series is tomorrow at 1:00 pm. The entire series is being broadcast on stretch internet. Go to the UWF Athletics home page (goargos.com) and look for the stretch internet link on the right side of the page.
Kyle Andrews once again was the catalyst for the Argos offense, as he reached base all five times, with three hits, and he scored four runs. Steven Bingert had a pair of hits and drove in four runs, while Greg Pron produced three RBI's on three hits. Brandon Brewer scored four runs, and drove in three runs on his home run. Jackson Woodard had a pair of hits and scored twice for the Argonauts, who pounded out seven extra base hits and 15 hits total in the lopsided victory.
The Argos pounded five doubles in addition to the Brewer and Boswell homeruns. Andrews, Woodard, Bingert, Scott Beckwith, and Tyler Hastings, all connected for doubles in the game one victory.
