UWF Baseball Drops Pitchers Duel to Lyon College, 1-0

March 18, 2008

Box Score

PENSACOLA, Fla. - West Florida starting pitcher Nick Presley allowed only five hits in a seven inning complete game, while Lyon pitchers Chris Brock and Nate Salahub combined on a five hit shutout. Lyon College scored an unearned run in the fifth inning, and it held up for the win. Scott Beckwith and Brandon Brewer both had a pair of hits for UWF, but the Argos couldn't push anyone across home-plate.

West Florida had a runner reach third base in the first and third innings, but couldn't get a run on the board. In the first inning, Kyle Andrews walked, and went to third base on Greg Pron's double; however, Andrews was picked off third base and then a strikeout ended the threat. In the third inning, Jon Reed was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on an error by the Scots. However, a fly out on the next at bat ended the inning.

Lyon College scored in the fifth inning after a two out walk. An error put the runner is scoring position, and a double by Josh Brown drove in what proved to be the only run of the night. The loss dropped the Argos to 12-17 on the season, and the two teams were playing the second game of the series right after the conclusion of the first game Tuesday night. With threat of rain for Wednesday afternoon, the two teams agreed to play a doubleheader on Tuesday evening instead.

Presley's outstanding pitching performance was only the third complete game pitched by the Argos this year. Billy Whitaker hurled a one hitter earlier in the year, while Kyle Ramsey threw a four hitter in a complete game victory over Montevallo this past Saturday. Meanwhile, Kyle Andrews reached base on two walks tonight, and maintained his .520 on base percentage which is among the leaders in the Gulf South Conference.

The Argos will host North Alabama for a three game conference series this weekend at Pelican Park. The games will be broadcast on Stretch internet, as the Argos defend their conference championship from one year ago.
