PENSACOLA, Fla. - The UWF baseball team improved to 2-2 in conference play, by defeating North Alabama 4-1, Friday night in game one of a doubleheader at Pelican Park. Starter Kyle Ramsey pitched his second straight complete game, to improve to 3-4 on the season. Ramsey went all nine innings and did not allow a walk, while striking out five batters. Jon Reed drove in two runs with a seventh inning single to give the Argos a 4-0 lead. North Alabama scored their lone run in the eighth inning on a single and a double, but Ramsey settled down to retire the Lions in order in the ninth inning.
West Florida scored two runs in the first inning and never looked back. Jimmy Boswell led off with a single, and Jon Reed and Greg Pron both drew walks to load the bases. A Craig Westcott groundout plated the first run, and then Steven Bingert singled in the second run. Both starting pitchers would cruise through the lineups until the Argos added two more runs in the seventh inning.
Jackson Woodard reached on an error with one out in the seventh inning, and then Brandon Brewer doubled to put runners on second and third. After a strikeout, Jon Reed came through with a clutch two out single to score both baserunners. The two run single gave the Argos a 4-0 cushion, which was more than Kyle Ramsey needed to put away the Lions. North Alabama dropped to 2-2 in conference play with two more games to be played this weekend between the Argos and Lions.
North Alabama scored a run in the eighth inning with a two out double. Ramsey would then retire the last four batters to finish the eighth and ninth innings to complete all nine innings with 100 pitches, only six hits, no walks, while striking out five batters. Game two of the series was scheduled immediately following this game. The series finale is Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm at Pelican Park.
