UWF Baseball Drops Rain Shortened Game to West Georgia

March 29, 2008

Box Score

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The West Florida baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision to the Wolves of West Georgia in a game that was halted after eight innings due to lightning in the area. Then ensuing rain ended play for the day. The Argos fell to 3-4 in conference play, while West Georgia improved to 2-2. The third game of the series was scheduled for Sunday, and will now be a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm EST (12:00 pm Central).

The Argos only managed three hits and scored one unearned run without a hit in the fifth inning. Meanwhile, the Wolves jumped out to a 5-0 lead, by scoring runs in the first three innings. West Georgia scored two in the first, one in the second, and two more in the third inning, with three hits in each inning. West Georgia starter Cory Gossett (5-2) pitched a complete game three hitter, allowing only an unearned run.

West Florida scored in the fifth inning, as Craig Westcott reached base by being hit by a pitch. After advancing to second base, Westcott scored when Gregg Burkel hit a long fly ball to center field, which was dropped for a two base error. Meanwhile, Steven Bingert had two of the three Argo hits, while Scott Beckwith had the other hit.

Argos starter Kyle Ramsey, fresh off back to back complete game victories took the loss to drop to 3-5 on the season, as he worked the first five innings. A good sign for the Argos pitching staff, was two impressive innings in relief by Jon Sintes, which included only one hit, and three strikeouts. Neither Ramsey or Sintes allowed a walk in the game, which is the par for Ramsey, who ranks in the top 15 in the nation in fewest walks per nine innings. Meanwhile, Sintes worked his first innings in awhile, as he has been recovering from illness, and if he can regain his sharpness, that could be a big help for UWF in the remaining conference games.

West Georgia is now 23-8 on the season, while the Argos fell to 15-21, with their fourth straight loss. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday, with weather permitting. Both games will be broadcast on Stretch Internet, located on goargos.com
