Argos Baseball Drops Doubleheader to #20 West Alabama

April 6, 2008

Box Score

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - West Florida, the reigning Gulf South Conference Champions, dropped a doubleheader to West Alabama at Livingston, Ala., by 9-3, and 7-2 scores. The losses dropped the Argos to 18-26 on the season, and 4-8 in conference play. The Argos have six conference games remaining, and all are at home, as they have three games with Alabama Huntsville, and three with Valdosta State to conclude the season. The Argos likely need four wins in the final six games to have a shot at making the conference tournament this season.

In the second game of Sunday's doubleheader, West Alabama scored three runs each in the fourth and sixth innings, and put up seven runs on just eight hits. However, three walks and a pair of hit batters, helped get base runners in scoring position for the Tigers. The Argos scored single runs in the 4th and 7th innings. Jon Reed had three hits for UWF, while Brandon Brewer added an RBI double in the 7th inning, and a Craig Westcott double in the fourth led to the Argos first run.

Kyle Ramsey started for the Argos, and lasted five innings, giving up eight hits and four runs, while striking out three and walking only one batter. Ramsey, now 3-6 on the season, cruised through the first two innings, and then a lead off home run in the third inning started the scoring. The Argos tied it in the top of the fourth inning, when Scott Beckwith singled, and moved to third base on Craig Westcott's double. Beckwith then scored on a Kevin Mierzwinski sacrifice fly to center field.

A four run bottom of the fourth for the Tigers broke open the game, as starter Matt Hill improved to 4-1 on the season, by pitching six innings, and only giving up five hits and one run.

The Argos added another run in the top of the seventh inning, as Eric Kroll walked, and scored on a Brandon Brewer double. Jon Reed followed with a single to put runners on the corner, but the rally stopped there.

UWF will return home for a three game conference series with Alabama Huntsville at Pelican Park next weekend. West Florida plays seven of the final eight regular season games at home, and finishes the year with Valdosta State visiting Pensacola in late April.
