BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - West Florida Starting Pitcher Kyle Ramsey was named the Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Week for this past week, on the strength of his complete game win over North Alabama last Friday. The Junior from Kissimmee, Florida earned his second career award, as he won the award the first week of the 2006 season as a Freshman. Ramsey's win over UNA marked his second consecutive complete game victory in conference play so far this season.
On Friday, Ramsey defeated the Lions 14-1 in the first game of an Argo doubleheader sweep. He scattered only six hits, allowed no walks and struck out five in his nine innings of work. The previous weekend, Ramsey hurled a four hitter against Montevallo, and nearly had a shutout, except for a two out home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. For the two games combined, Ramsey has allowed only 10 hits and two runs in his last 18 innings.
The lefthander hurler is currently ranked fifth in the nation for fewest walks allowed per nine innings. Overall, he has allowed less than one walk per nine innings, and his 0.91 walks per nine innings is the best in the Gulf South Conference. The weekly award for Ramsey was the first of the season for the defending GSC champion Argos.
As the current Argos ace, Ramsey leads the team in innings pitched (49), strikeouts (35), and ERA (3.44). He is 3-4 on the season and tied with Shane Greene and Billy Whitaker for most wins. He has pitched two of the Argos four complete games this year.
