UWF Baseball Honors Seniors in Weekend Baseball Series

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The West Florida baseball team plays its final 2008 baseball games this weekend at Pelican Park. The Argonauts will be hosting fifteenth ranked Valdosta State for a doubleheader on Saturday, with a single game on Sunday. Three Argonaut seniors will be playing their final games in UWF uniform.

West Florida is 19-30 so far this season, as they are the defending GSC Champions. They will finish the 2008 season somewhere between fifth place and seventh place, while Valdosta State will be playing for first place, with the Argos playing as spoilers this weekend. VSU enters the weekend with a 32-15 record and a slim lead over West Alabama in the GSC standings.

The Argos are 2-13 on the road, but have played well at home this year, and enter the final series with a 17-16 record at Pelican Park. Seniors Jon Reed, Nick Presley, and David Pedro will be honored prior to Saturday's games, for their career achievements as West Florida baseball student athletes.

Outfielder Jon Reed (Chesterfield, Va.) is batting .318 since joining UWF in 2007 with four home runs (all coming this season) and 40 runs batted in. In 2007, Reed batted .305 in 118 at bats with 12 walks. He leads the team with 10 doubles this season and has seven stolen bases in eight attempts. He is batting .333 this season, and has a team high slugging percentage of .543. Reed hit a game winning two run double against Auburn-Montgomery University giving the Argos a big win earlier this season.

Pitcher Nick Presley (Milton, Fl) has a 6-5 record in two seasons with 113.2 innings pitched with a 4.81 ERA for the Argos. In 2007, Presley made 18 appearances with 9 starts and posted a 3.36 ERA. He had two complete games and opponents batted .286 against him. He leads the team with 43 strikeouts this year, and has 100 career strikeouts at UWF, while averaging 7.17 strikeouts per nine innings. Presley pitched a seven inning complete game against Lyon College on March 18th this year allowing one run while striking out five batters.

Pitcher David Pedro (Miami, Fl) has made 35 appearances in relief totaling 37.1 innings in his two seasons at UWF. In 2007, Pedro had a 3-0 record and one save with a 4.79 ERA in 19 appearances. Pedro has 34 strikeouts and 21 walks in two seasons, with only seven walks in 26.2 innings this season. He pitched 5.1 innings of relief against Stillman College and struck out six, to pick up a win April 1st. He has a 4-0 record and a 5.25 ERA in his UWF career.

Saturday's doubleheader starts at 2:00 pm, while the Sunday game is slated for a 1:00 pm start. The Seniors will be honored prior to the 2:00 pm Saturday game one. The first game on Saturday, and Sunday's game, will be broadcast on Stretch Internet, which is available by going to the Athletic Home page, and finding the stretch internet link along the right side of the page.
