UWF Men's Tennis Defeats North Alabama, 5-1

March 8, 2008

Huntsville, Ala. After shutting down West Alabama, the now fourth ranked West Florida Men's Tennis (8-1, 2-0 GSC) earned its eighth victory of the season by rolling over another GSC rival. The Argonauts defeated the 30th ranked North Alabama (3-4, 2-1 GSC) on Saturday, March 8th at the UAH campus in Huntsville, Ala.. The Argonauts crashed the Lions by only dropping a doubles match, to clinch the match at 5-1.

Playing conference rules, in which the first team reaching five points is declared the winner and the matches still on court would not need to finish, the Argonauts stepped up and quickly got the lead. The Argos earned the lead without having to play in the third doubles spot. In the first doubles position, Luis Arboleda (junior/Medellin, Colombia) and Luiz Bernardi (senior/Campinas, Brazil) fell short to the Lions #1 duo, 9-7. In the second doubles spot, Nicolas Barrientos (senior/Cali, Colombia) and Patrick Batman (sophomore/Apopka, Fla.) quickly defeated Chris Sodemann and Jan Miskos, 8-4. Carlos Zamora (freshman/Copenhagen, Denmark) and Jose Ycaza (junior/ Guayaquil, Ecuador) did not need to get in the action, winning by default, since the Lions were one player short due to an injury. After the doubles play, the Argonauts got the 2-1 lead over the Lions.

In the singles action, the Argos did not have trouble to reach five points and finish the match. Once again the Argonauts earned a point by default. In the sixth position, Patrick Batman did not need to enter the court, as the Lions #6 player was injured. In the fifth position, Zamora was up a set and 4-1 in the second over Martin Siejka, when his opponent needed to retire from the match. The fifth point was earned in the first singles position, when Barrientos was pushed to a second set tiebreak to defeat Jan Miskos, 6-3, 7-6(2), to give the Argonauts a final score of 5-1.

The Argonauts earned its eighth win of the season and improved its record to 8-1. The Argonauts will return to action later this Saturday, March 8, 2008, when they face another GSC rival, the unranked "conference weekend" hosting Alabama-Huntsvlle. The match will be played at the Huntsville Athletic Club in Huntsville, Ala. at 4:00p.m. CT. This will be the third and last match played on the conference road trip to Huntsville, Ala.
