PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Argonauts continued to swing the bat in the second game against Grace College on Tuesday afternoon. Taren Walton pitched the West Florida win in just five innings to improve to 5-1 on the season. Walton allowed only one run off of four hits to pick up the win. Kat Pursell led at the plate, going 3-for-3 with 2 RBI's.
The Argos started off the first inning with a Dawnyele Stapleton walk and a double by Whitney Gay. Kristee Wheeler executed a sacrifice bunt with an RBI on the run scored by Stapleton. Pursell's first hit of the game was a single down the right field line to scored Gay. Amie McMillion advanced Kat Pursell to third base, and reached on an error by the first basemen. After a McMillion steal, Kat Sheppard doubled to left center and picked up 2 RBI's. Sheppard came around to score on a Franny Bell single, and Sarah Hinesly reached first on a throwing error by the Grace shortstop. Both Bell and Hinesly then advanced on the same error that rolled down the left field line to put runners at second and third. After a wild pitch scored Bell, Hinesly followed suit when the pitcher dropped the ball on the tag attempt at the plate.
West Florida scored five more runs in the third inning which eventually clinched the win in the fifth inning. Sheppard led off with a single, but was out at second when Franny Bell reached on a fielder's choice. A walk from Hinesly and a single for Stapleton loaded the bases for Wheeler. Wheeler took advantage of the situation and blasted a grand slam to bring the score to 13-0.
Grace College managed to score one run in the fourth inning, but the Argos held on through the fifth to win by run rule. UWF combined for 9 hits in the victory that boosted their record to 14-4. The Argos will face Barry University in a double header on Wednesday afternoon at 2pm and 4pm CST.
