PENSACOLA, Fla. - UWF was held to two hits by Barry pitcher Megan Young on Wednesday afternoon. West Florida pitcher Emily Burge started strong, striking out the side in the first inning and went on to strike out nine batters in seven innings. Burge gave up 16 hits, but did not walk a single Barry batter.
Barry jumped on board in the second inning with two doubles and a Holli Davis single to score Megan Young and Amanda Goelz. Davis stole second and Brittany Anderson singled to left to advance the runner. Anderson stole and Shyla Rider singled, advancing on the throw and scoring Davis and Anderson. Christina DeTagle's single scored Rider, but DeTagle was thrown out at third base by catcher Kristee Wheeler.
Sara Hipson struck out to begin the fourth inning, but a dropped ball by Wheeler forced a throw to first. A called illegal substitution on first basemen Julie Carroll allowed Hipson to be called safe at first. Davis came up to reach on a fielder's choice and then advance to second on the throw, while Hipson was safe at second on an error. Hipson attempted to advance on the error and was thrown out by Whitney Gay at third base. A Shyla Rider RBI double scored Davis to put another run on the board for Barry.
Barry scored runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, but West Florida was able to squeak out a run in the sixth to prevent a run rule. Julie Carroll drew a walk to start the sixth inning and advance to second and third on two wild pitches by Young. Gay singled straight up the middle to score Carroll. The Argos will leave Thursday afternoon to participate in the Clark-Atlanta Tournament in Georgia, schedule to be announced.
