West Florida Drops Decision to Shorter College, 4-3

March 12, 2008

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Argonauts suffered a 4-3 loss to Shorter College on Wednesday afternoon despite efforts by pitcher Taren Walton and 11 Argo hits. Walton gave up only four hits and struck out 12 batters in seven innings. Four West Florida ladies were two-for-four at the plate, and Jillian LaFrance knocked her fifth homerun out of the park.

There were two Argonaut errors on the game that allowed Shorter to jump out by three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Argos started the second with a Nicky VanCamp walk, and LaFrance singled to move VanCamp to third. With the go ahead run on third, Stephany Aguiliar singled and picked up an RBI on VanCamp's score.

Shorter added another run to the board in the third after a leadoff double and an RBI single. West Florida again answered in the top of the fourth with LaFrance's solo homerun to right center. Walton singled, but Argo bats could not move her around.

West Florida's seventh inning seemed promising when Heather Bell hit a single up the middle with only one out. Whitney Gay and Caurie Miller followed suit, both with singles up the middle to load the bases for a threatening VanCamp. VanCamp singled to right center to score Bell, but again UWF bats could not advance any more runners to pull off a win.

UWF softball continued Spring Fling play immediately following in game two against Shorter College Wednesday afternoon.
