PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Argonauts again battled with Drury University and lost in the the seventh inning, 8-7. There were seven Argo hits on the game and just one error defensively. First basemen Julie Carroll led at the plate, going two-for-three with a grand slam and a single. Pitcher Emily Burge got the start, but Jillian LaFrance came in with the score 5-5 and was credited with the loss. The Argonauts dropped their record to 21-12 on the season with the two losses today.
Argonaut Julie Carroll had something to say in the first inning of the second game against Drury. Whitney Gay started the inning with a single through the right side, followed by Caurie Miller with a deep single to the shortstop. With two on base, Kristee Wheeler drew a walk to load the bases for Carroll. On a three-two count with two outs and the bases loaded, Julie Carroll hit a grand slam for her second homerun of the season.
Nicky VanCamp put another run on the board in the third inning after getting the Argo bats going with a deep single to right center field. Carroll again came through with a single to advance VanCamp, who would come around to score on a Drury wild pitch.
The first Drury run came in the top of the fourth inning off an Emily Burge illegal pitch. With two outs in the top of the fifth inning, Drury University produced five more runs on six hits. A leadoff single for Drury started the inning, followed by a fielder's choice in which everyone was safe. Five more back-to-back hits scored the fiver runs that gained the lead for Drury.
Pitcher Jillian LaFrance chose to help herself in the bottom of the sixth inning when a stand-up double to left field scored Julie Carroll, on with a walk, to tie the game, but Drury wasn't finished and broke the tie with two more runs in the top of the seventh inning. Back-to-back lead off doubles and a single from the third batter produced the two runs that captured the win for Drury. West Florida made an attempt in the bottom of the seventh inning to win after Julie Carroll picked up an RBI on a groundout to score pinch runner Kat Pursell, but the one run was not enough.
The Argonauts will continue Spring Fling play tomorrow evening in a doubleheader against Pittsburg State, starting at 5PM CST. The Argos go on the road Friday and Saturday to continue GSC conference play at West Georgia and then West Alabama.
