CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Florida improved their GSC conference record to 4-3, and their overall record to 22-12 with a shutout win over West Georgia on Friday afternoon, 9-0. Together, the Argonauts had eight hits and drew ten walks to get the win. Taren Walton was given the start and earned the win to improve to 8-4 on the season. Walton gave up just five hits, had eight strikeouts, and did not walk a single West Georgia batter.
The Argos put their first run on the board in the first inning when the top of the lineup loaded the bases on walks. Heather Bell made her getaway from third on a passed ball from West Georgia pitcher Kacie Crider to put one up for West Florida before the end of the inning.
The third, fourth, and fifth innings each brought two runs for the Argonauts to increase the lead to 7-0 at the end of five. Walton led off the third inning with a double, and shortstop Caurie Miller put one over the left field fence for 2 RBIs on her fourth homerun of the season. Stephany Aguiliar drew a walk at the beginning of the fourth inning and advanced to second on a Melissa Chastang sacrifice bunt. Bell drew another walk and both runners advanced on a Whitney Gay fly out. Walton had her second key hit of the game with an RBI single to left field that scored Aguiliar. Nicky VanCamp followed suit with an RBI single in the hole on the left side that scored Heather Bell.
The fifth inning started again with a walk drawn by Aguiliar to put a runner on the base for Chastang. Chastang came through for the Argos with her first homerun of the year over the left field fence to bring the score to 7-0. Julie Carroll made her statement in the seventh inning with a walk off homerun, her third his season. With yet another walk, Heather Bell reached first and then advanced on a wild pitch. Kat Pursell picked up an RBI with a single to right center that scored Bell.
The Argonauts continued conference play against West Georgia immediately following the first game.
