CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Argos were relentless in the second game against GSC opponent West Georgia, with eleven hits and ten walks. Pitcher Emily Burge claimed the victory which improved her to 7-2 on the season. "Our pitchers did a great job spreading out their hits and keeping West Georgia hitters off balance," said Head Coach Tami Cyr after the West Georgia sweep. The wins brought UWF to 5-3 against GSC opponents and 23-12 on the season thus far.
The Argos began their display in the top of the second inning in which Burge started the bats with a single to centerfield. Both Melissa Chastang and pinch hitter Jillian LaFrance drew walks to load the bases for Whitney Gay who singled up the middle to score Burge. Chastang then scored on a Taren Walton walk to increase the lead. Nicky VanCamp picked up an RBI on a single to the left side which scored Heather Bell, who was running for LaFrance. Gay scored one more run for UWF off of a Caurie Miller walk before the inning ended to bring the score to 4-0.
West Georgia answered in the bottom of the second with one run off of three singles, but this would prove to be their only run of the game. All was quiet until Heather Bell singled up the middle with two outs in the top of the fifth inning. After Bell stole second, Gay went deep over the centerfield fence for 2 RBIs and her fourth homerun of the season.
The sixth inning clinched the win for West Florida with four runs on just three hits. Caurie Miller led off with a walk, but was out at second when Kristee Wheeler reached on a fielder's choice. Wheeler advanced to second on a wild pitch and Julie Carroll walked to put two runners on base. Pitcher Emily Burge helped her own cause with a three run homerun to right center field, her first of the year. Left fielder Chastang added an insurance run immediately following Burge with a solo homerun to centerfield, her second of the year and of the day.
Head Coach Tami Cyr was impressed with West Florida hitters. "Our offense showed discipline at the plate, drawing walks and having key hits deep in the count," she said after both games. Between both games, UWF hitters drew 20 walks, produced 19 hits, and had 6 homeruns.
West Florida will continue GSC play this afternoon in a doubleheader against the University of West Alabama in Livingston, Alabama beginning at 1PM.
