LIVINGSTON, Ala. - Another win looked promising for UWF before they fell to West Alabama in the bottom of the seventh inning. West Florida's Taren Walton got the start, but Emily Burge was credited with the loss when she entered the game as pitcher in the bottom of the fourth inning with a 4-3 lead. Nicky VanCamp was again a leader at the plate, going three-for-four on the game, while Caurie Miller led with two RBIs in the game. Combined, the Argos produced 10 hits that matched West Alabama's 10 hits in the GSC matchup.
The Argos jumped ahead with the lead in the first inning as Whitney Gay started the hits with a double down the right field line. Taren Walton drew a walk and Nicky VanCamp collected her first RBI of the game with a single that scored pinch runner Amie McMillion. Walton then scored on a Caurie Miller single up the middle to put two runs on the board early in the game.
West Florida struck again in the third inning to put up two more runs and increase their lead to 4-0. Walton led off the inning with a single up the middle, and Dawnyele Stapleton entered the game as a pinch runner. VanCamp produced another single to advance Stapleton and put two runners on base. Miller picked up her second RBI when she reached on a fielder's choice and scored Stapleton. Both runners advanced when Julie Carroll singled to right field, but VanCamp was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice that allowed Emily Burge to reach first. Miller was also thrown out at home on a fielder's choice hit by pinch hitter Jillian LaFrance. However, Melissa Chastang came through with an RBI that scored Carroll before the inning ended.
West Alabama produced two runs off of four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning before Burge came in to help West Florida get out of the inning. All was quiet on the scoreboard until the bottom of the seventh inning when three West Alabama runs clinched the victory. Four hits from the UWA lineup were responsible for the game-winning runs.
West Florida continues play at home this week, starting Monday against UW-Oshkosh with the first pitch at 5PM CST.
