PENSACOLA, Fla. - In the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with GSC West Division powerhouse Arkansas Tech, the Argos came up short by a 2-0 score. It took two Golden Suns pitchers to combine on a four hitter to stop the Argos from sweeping the doubleheader. West Florida had won the first game of the day in 10 innings. Taren Walton pitched a strong seven innings, but took the loss to drop to 8-5 on the season.
Arkansas Tech scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and pitchers Dana Aldrich and Casey Hammons made the runs stand up for the win. Arkansas Tech improved to 25-7 on the season, while the Argos fell to 25-14 with the loss. The Golden Suns scored an unearned fourth inning run off Walton, when the lead off hitter reached on an Argo error, and scored on a two out single.
In the fifth inning, a lead off double for Arkansas Tech turned into a run on another two out single. Then in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Argos' Julie Carroll led off with a single, and Stephany Aguiliar walked to put two runners on. A sacrifice bunt by Melissa Chastang, put two runners in scoring position with just one out; however, the Argos couldn't capatilize as a fly out and a ground out ended the threat.
Jillian LaFrance, Whitney Gay, and Taren Walton each had singles in addition to Carroll's hit to account for the four Argo hits. Meanwhile, the Golden Suns had eight hits on the way to their victory. West Florida will be back on the field this Friday to take on Wisconsin OshKosh in a doubleheader at the UWF Softball Complex, with game times set for 2:00 and 4:00 pm.
