COLUMBUS, Ga. - The fifth ranked West Florida Women's tennis team (0-2), is off to a tough start this season. For the second straight day the Argos played a challenging opponent, and for the first time this season, the opponent was a Division II squad. The 17th ranked Georgia College & State University (3-0) defeated the fifth ranked Argonauts 6-3, in Columbus, Georgia. West Florida struggled in the singles action, but dominated the doubles play.
During the doubles action, the Argonauts picked up a 2-1 lead, only dropping in the third spot. In the first doubles spot, the Argos fifth ranked doubles team of Suzana Cavalcante (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Paola Arevalo (senior/Cali, Colombia) defeated the Bobcats Celine Martin and Diana Danna without dropping a single game. In the second spot, the Argonauts Taylor Brewster (freshman/Ontaro, Canada) and Tatiana Rodrigues (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) defeated the Bobcats Marjorie Ceppo and Sophia Intriago by an 8-4 score. The Argonauts dropped the third doubles point when Renata Mattos (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Lorena Rebolledo (freshman/Puebla, Mexico) were defeated 8-2.
In singles action the matches turned the other way, and the Bobcats won five out of six matches. The lone win in singles for the Argonauts came in the first position, in which third ranked Cavalcante rolled over her opponent with a 6-1, 6-1 win. In the second spot, 45th ranked Arevalo fell short, being defeated in straight sets by a 6-3, 6-1 score. In the third singles spot, Mattos had a one set lead, but let the win slip through her hands, and was defeated in three sets 5-7, 7-5, 6-4. In the fourth spot, Brewster was not able to keep up with her opponent, dropping her match 6-1, 6-2. Meanwhile, Rodrigues pushed her opponent to a third set, but the Bobcats earned the point with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 win. Rebolledo then dropped her match in straight sets by a 6-3, 6-4 score, giving the final point to the Bobcats to finish the match at 6-3.
The Bobcats improves to a 3-0 record, while the Argonauts dropped to 0-2 on the young season. The Argonauts will now return to action tomorrow, Sunday 17th at 10:00a.m. ET against 13th ranked Columbus State. West Florida will play its third consecutive road match against a top ranked opponent, and are looking to get their first team victory.
