Winter Park, Fla. The fifth ranked, West Florida (1-6) is off a tough season start. The Argonauts dropped the first five matches of the season, and bounced back with the first victory. When the Argos seemed to be on the right track, the team was upset by 16th ranked, Barry (8-2), 4-5. The Argos came really to win the match, as they had the lead, however, they were not able to hold it and close the match. With the result, the Argos suffered its sixth loss of the season.
The Argonauts started the match with an advantage on the score marker. The Argonauts opened a 2-1 lead after the doubles action, In the first doubles spot, the fifth ranked doubles team formed by Argonauts Suzana Cavalcante (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Paola Arevalo (senior/Cali, Colombia) defeated the team formed by Bucs Ildiko Csordas and Caroline Stevens 8-5. In the second spot, Argonauts Taylor Brewster (freshman/Ontaro, Canada) and Rebolledo (freshman/Puebla, Mexico) got a single game off the Bucs second duo, falling at 8-1. Also with a 8-1 score, Renata Mattos (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Lorena Tatiana Rodrigues (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) defeated Berit Peterson and Olivia Lilien, to give the lead to the Argonauts.
In singles play, both teams showed to be even, with four of the six matches having to be decided in a third set. In the sixth singles position, Rodrigues defeated Saskia Kruse in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, to give the 3-1 lead to the Argonauts. In the fourth spot, Brewster were defeated in straight sets, 7-6(7), 7-5, to shorten the Argos distance to 3-2 on the scoreboard. After a one set lead, Rebolledo was pushed to a third set, and fell 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, to tie the match at 3-3. In the second singles spot, 45th ranked, Arevalo, also fell in the third set to the Bucs, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-2. At this point, with a 4-3 lead, the Argonauts would need to win the next two matches. Playing in the third position, 43rd ranked, Mattos, easily won the first set, however, was also pushed to a third set. Mattos upset 25th ranked, Angie Werschel, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5, to once again tie the match, this time at 4-4. In the first spot, 3rd ranked third Cavalcante did not drop a game in the first set, and was leading 3-0 in the second, when tenth ranked, Ildiko Csordas, pushed her to a third decisive set. In the third set, Cavalcante again had the lead at 4-1 and let it slip through her hands, being pushed to a tiebreak. Cavalcante dropped it at 7-5 and the match at 0-6, 6-4, 7-6(5), giving the final point to the Buccaneers to finish the match at 5-4.
The Buccaneers improves to a 8-2 record, while the Argonauts drops to 1-6. The Argonauts will now return to action on Friday, March 7th, 2008 when will start the Gulf South Conference play. The Argonauts will face GSC rival West Alabama in Huntsville, Ala. at 12:00p.m. CT. This will be the first match played against a GSC opponent this season. During the two-day road trip, the Argos will later face other GSC rivals, North Alabama, and Alabama-Huntsville.
