Suzana Cavalcante earned victories in sinlges and doubles against the Lady Tigers
 
 
West Florida Women's Tennis Defeats 6-1 Division I University of Memphis

Pensacola, Fla.After blanking four Gulf South Conference opponents, the West Florida Women's Tennis team (6-6, 4-0 GSC) got a more impressive win this Sunday, March 9, 2008 at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carlson Complex, located at the UWF main campus. Playing for the first time at home this season, the Argonauts, now 18th ranked, defeated 6-1 Division I opponent University of Memphis. The Argos, who at one point had a 1-6 overall record, bounces back from a tough season start, by posting its fifth straight win. Against the Lady Tigers, the Argos dominated the doubles play, and only dropped a match in the singles action.

Playing under the Division I rules, in which only one point is awarded to the team that wins the doubles clash and the first team to reach four out of seven points is declared the winner, the match started off with the Argonauts earning the lead after the doubles action, by winning two out of three doubles matches. In the first doubles spot, the Division II fifth ranked doubles team formed by Argonauts Suzana Cavalcante (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Paola Arevalo (senior/Cali, Colombia) defeated the team formed by Lady Tigers Kristin Chamberlain and Ashley Murdock, 8-2. The Lady Tigers won one the match in the second doubles position when, Argonauts Taylor Brewster (freshman/Ontaro, Canada) and Lorena Rebolledo (freshman/Puebla,Mexico) fell short in a tiebreak, 9-8(4). In the third doubles spot, Renata Mattos (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Tatiana Rodrigues (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) defeated Dara Toulch and Lindsey Wiseman with a 9-7 score, giving the 1-0 lead to the Argonauts.

In singles action, the argos earned five more points. Playing in the first singles position, Division II third ranked, Cavalcante, easily defeated Murdock with a 6-3, 6-0 score. In the second position, Division II 45th ranked, Arevalo rolled over Wiseman with a 6-1, 6-2 score. Mattos beat Toulch 6-0, 6-2 in the third singles spot. Playing in the fourth spot, Brewster was pushed to a third set super tiebreak , and beat 2-6, 6-4, 10-2 Amanda Brown. The Lady Tigers only earned a point when Rebolledo fell short 6-1, 6-2 to Chamberlain in the fifth singles position. The last point earned by the Argos was in the sixth singles spot, when Rodrigues defeated Ekin Zafir with a double 6-3, to give the Argonauts a final score of 6-1.

The Argonauts improved to a 6-6 overall record, while the Lady Tigers dropped to 5-7. The Argos will return to action next Thursday 13th, at 2:00p.m. CT. The Argonauts will play its second home match of this season at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carlson Complex located at the UWF main campus. The Argos will face Division I UT-Martin.
