UWF Women's Tennis Falls 7-2 to Top-Ranked BYU-Hawaii

PENSACOLA, Fla. The West Florida Women's Tennis team (11-8, 4-0 GSC) fell 7-2 this to top ranked BYU-Hawaii (18-0). The match started on Tuesday April 1st and due to the rain it had to be postponed to Thursday, April 3rd. The defending national champions Seasiders had the lead in every doubles match when the rain hit the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Complex, forcing the matches to be cancelled. At the matches' continuation, the now 16th ranked Argonauts were not able to stop the Seasiders, who dropped only a match in singles and a match in doubles.

As the doubles matches resumed, the Seasiders held the advantage from two days before in two doubles spots. In the first doubles spot, fifth ranked doubles team formed by Argonauts Suzana Cavalcante (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Paola Arevalo (senior/Cali, Colombia) managed to come back from a disadvantage to come back over top ranked team formed by Maggie Deng and Elwen Li from BYU-Hawaii. With a 8-6 score. In the second doubles position, the Argonauts Taylor Brewster (freshman/Ontaro, Canada) and Lorena Rebolledo (freshman/Puebla,Mexico) fell 8-4 to the Seasiders second doubles duo. In the third doubles spot, Renata Mattos (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Tatiana Rodrigues (junior/Sao Paulo, Brazil) also fell 8-4 to the Seasiders, giving them the 2-1 lead.

In singles action, the Argos earned a single point out in matches played. Playing in the first singles position, Division II third ranked, Cavalcante, fell 6-2, 6-1 short to the top ranked player in Division I, Elwen Li from BYU-Hawaii. In the second position, 45th ranked Arevalo were also defeated by a ranked player. Arevalo fell 6-1, 6-2 to sixth ranked player Maggie Deng. 43rd ranked Mattos pushed her opponent to a third set, however fell short 3-6, 7-5 (10-6) in the third singles spot. Playing in the fourth spot, Brewster fell in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. In the fifth spot, Rebolledo also fell in straight sets to the Seasiders, with a 6-2, 6-0. The only point earned by the Argos in the singles action was in the sixth singles spot, when Rodrigues rallied from a set down to defeat Ayako Ikeda with a 4-6, 6-1 (10-5) score. to give the Seasiders the final score of 7-2.

The Argonauts dropped to a 11-8 overall record, while the Seasiders improved to 18-0. The Argos will return to action next Sundday 6th, at 9:00a.m. CT. The Argonauts will face GSC rival Delta State at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carlson Complex located at the UWF main campus.
