Saint Mary's Diamon Simpson Named WCC Player Of The Week
Feb. 26, 2008
SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Saint Mary's junior forward Diamon Simpson was selected as the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for his performances in the Gaels' games versus Kent State and San Diego. The weekly conference honor is Simpson's second of the season. Simpson turned in a brilliant week averaging a double-double with 19.5 points and 13.0 rebounds per game. The Hayward, CA native connected on 16-of-28 shots from the field (57.1 percent) and added 3.0 assists, 3.0 blocks, and 1.5 steals per game. Simpson started the week by scoring a team-high 24 points to go along with a game-best 15 rebounds against Kent State. He also tallied game-highs in assists (4), blocks (3), and steals (3). Two nights later, in a crucial conference win against San Diego, Simpson tied for game-high honors with 15 points, while grabbing a game-best 11 boards. The win versus the Toreros guarantees Saint Mary's at least a second-place finish in the regular season standings and a bye into the semifinals of next week's conference tournament. Simpson now has 12 double-doubles on the season, the second most in the WCC. Simpson and the Gaels travel to No. 24 Gonzaga (3/1) on Saturday with the WCC title on the line before closing out the regular season at Portland (3/3) on Monday. 2007-08 WCC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
