Green Bay Swim Teams Blow Past Western Illinois

MACOMB, Ill. - The Green Bay swimming and diving teams recorded impressive victories over Western Illinois Friday night, as the women landed a 164-79 win, while the men cruised to a 144.5-98.5 triumph.

The women won nine of the 13 events, including seven of the last eight to pick up the team's ninth straight victory. Meanwhile, the men won eight titles to claim Green Bay's fourth win in its last five outings.

Green Bay's women swept the distance events as Deanna DeGrand (Green Bay, Wis.) won the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:43.04, while Shannon Demrow (Algonquin, Ill.) touched first in the 500 free (5:13.40).

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Green Bay's Dana Doute (Kiel, Wis.) was victorious, as she swam a time of 1:07.54, her fastest time of the season. In addition, Ashley Warzon (Sussex, Wis.) went 58.08 to win the 100-yard butterfly and Danielle DeGrand (Green Bay, Wis.) won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.42.

Green Bay's divers also performed well. Lauren McGraw (Woodbury, Minn.) won the 1-meter dive with a score of 243.23, while Kari Helland (Wayzata, Minn.) was the top performer on the 3-meter board (238.80).

Alex Hill (Lakeville, Minn.) was a standout in the men's sprint events. He had a winning time of 22.01 in the 50 free and logged a clocking of 47.78 to take the 100 free.

Travis Mathers (Baraboo, Wis.) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.96 and the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.40. Mathers and Hill were also on the victorious 200-yard medley relay team that had a time of 1:37.54, good for first place by more than three seconds.

Other Phoenix winners were Andrew Gelden in the 400-yard individual medley (4:18.96) and Jason Askew in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.38). Askew's time was the fastest by a Green Bay swimmer in the event this season and is the fifth-best time in the Horizon League.

The women return to action Saturday at 11 a.m. against Illinois State. Both teams conclude the regular season Saturday, Feb. 2 with a dual meet at Horizon League rival Milwaukee.
