Milwaukee Snaps Women's Swimming Winning Streak
Feb. 2, 2008
MILWAUKEE - The Green Bay women's swimming team saw its 10-meet winning streak halted on Saturday afternoon by in-state and Horizon League rival Milwaukee by a 137-106 count. The Phoenix men suffered a 169-74 loss to the Panthers in the season finale. The highlight of the meet came courtesy of senior Kari Helland (Wayzata, Minn.), who received an NCAA qualifying score and career-best mark of 267.60 in the 1-meter diving competition. She will become the first Green Bay female diver to participate at the NCAA event, and the second Phoenix participant ever, joining Phil Zumstein, who qualified on the men's side last year. Danielle DeGrand (Green Bay, Wis.) was the lone two-event winner for the Phoenix women. She won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:08.53 and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:07.32. Shannon Demrow (Algonquin, Ill.) was victorious in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:07.44 for Green Bay's other individual victory. The 400-yard medley relay team of Mary Stravinski (DeForest, Wis.), Jamie Larsen (Greenfield, Wis.), Allison Thut (Green Bay, Wis.) and Katelyn Bodin (Maple Grove, Minn.) won the event with a time of 3:55.90. Alex Hill (Lakeville, Minn.) was the star on the men's side for Green Bay. He won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:41.88, the third-fastest time in the Horizon League this year and his best of the season. Hill also won the 500 free with a clocking of 4:38.44. Green Bay now prepares for the Horizon League Championships, which will take place in Cleveland, Ohio from Feb. 20-23. The women's team has won three consecutive league crowns. --www.uwgbathletics.com-- |
