Records Fall as Phoenix Swimmers Rise
Feb. 21, 2008
CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Green Bay women's 400-yard medley relay team broke the school, pool and championship records on Thursday night, helping the squad jump into first place at the midway point of the 2008 Horizon League Championships. That was far from the lone highlight, however, as Green Bay set four more school records on day two of the event. The women, three-time defending league champs, began the day in third place, but finished the evening with 320 points, 28 more than both Milwaukee and Wright State. The men's team is in fifth with 204.5 points, while Wright State leads the field with 295. The relay team of Danielle DeGrand, Dana Doute, Ashley Warzon and Laurel Yelton posted a time of 3:50.64, which in addition to setting the school record, easily bested the previous pool record (3:51.09) and the league meet mark (3:51.26). DeGrand continued her record-breaking performance when her second-place time of 2:06.04 in the 200-yard individual medley topped the prior school standard. Doute (2:09.14) and Yelton (2:09.49) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, giving the Phoenix three of the top five places in the event. Green Bay also was stellar in the 1-meter diving event, as the Phoenix again claimed three of the top five positions. Lauren McGraw took the title with a school-record score of 276.55 in the finals. Kari Helland (246.35) was third and Kayla Deters (224.20) placed fifth, giving Green Bay another huge lift in the point standings. Freshman Shannon Demrow also established a new school record time when she went 5:00.11 to place third in the 500-yard freestyle. Kelsey Hausken also starred, earning a second-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle by touching the wall in 23.76. On the men's side, Alex Hill was crowned the conference champion in the 500 free with a time of 4:28.70. He also set a school record with his swim. In addition, Tim Scanlan made the finals in the event, taking eighth in 4:39.40, while Cory Carlson placed eighth in the 500 free (21.09). The meet continues Friday and will wrap up on Saturday. Friday events include the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, 800-yard freestyle relay and the men's 1-meter dive.
