Women Expand Lead During Day Three of Swimming Championships

AKRON, Ohio - The Green Bay women's swimming and diving team increased its lead to 64 points over Wright State with one day remaining at the Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships. The Phoenix is in search of its fourth straight league title.

The women own 569 points through three days to rank ahead of their nearest competitors, Wright State (505) and Milwaukee (476). With 346.5 points, the Green Bay men are fifth among six teams. Wright State tops the men's standings with 535 points.

Danielle DeGrand earned a conference championship in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.10. She topped teammate Mary Stravinski, who was the runner up in 58.08.

Ashley Warzon became the conference champion in the 100-yard butterfly, setting a school record in the process, with a time of 56.27.

The 800 free relay team of Shannon Demrow, DeGrand, Dana Doute and Laurel Yelton placed second with a school-record time of 7:34.03. Swimming leadoff, Demrow posted a school-record mark in the 200 free with a 1:52.77 split. She also placed third in the 200 free with a swim of 1:53.34.

For the men, Alex Hill set a school record for the second consecutive night, this time in the 200-yard freestyle. He placed second with a clocking of 1:39.57, just .08 out of first place.

Other top-8 finishers for Green Bay on the night were: Gretchen Herrema (5th) and Stravinski (8th) in the women's 400-yard individual medley; Allison Thut (4th) and Katelyn Bodin (5th) in the women's 100 fly; Dan Judge (8th) in the men's 100 fly; Yelton (4th) in the women's 200 free; Travis Mathers (7th) in the men's 200 free; Dana Doute (5th), Jamie Larsen (6th) and Kelsey Hausken (7th) in the women's 100-yard breaststroke; Jason Askew (6th) in the men's 100 breast; and Megan Jacobi (7th) and Bodin (8th) in the women's 100 back.

The championships were moved to the University of Akron's Oliver J. Ocasek Natatorium following a water-main break in the area surrounding Cleveland State University's Busbey Natatorium on Friday morning.

Saturday's action will also take place in Akron. Events include the 1,650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard freestyle relay. In addition, the men's 1-meter and women's 3-meter diving events will be contested. Due to the change in venue, no web streaming will be available and for the second straight day, no preliminaries will be held.
