Late Barkley Bucket Gives Phoenix 64-62 Win Over Detroit
Feb. 2, 2008 DETROIT - Cordero Barkley received a feed from Rahmon Fletcher and scored on a layup from the left side with 2.6 seconds remaining to give the Green Bay Phoenix (12-9, 6-5) a thrilling 66-64 victory over the Detroit Titans (5-16, 1-10) Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall. Green Bay scored its basket with just one second remaining on the shot clock. After the Phoenix hoop, Detroit tried to quickly push the ball to the other end of the floor, but was unable to get a shot off before time expired. It was another tight Horizon League contest for the Phoenix, which has now played eight straight games that have been decided by single digits. This season, Green Bay owns an impressive 7-2 record in games determined by eight points or less. Mike Schachtner finished with a game-high 24 points, while Terry Evans matched his career high with 16 points. It was the third time in the last four games that Evans has scored 16 points. Green Bay led by four at the half, 29-25, and by as many as 10 with 18:46 remaining after a tomahawk slam by Evans. However, the Titans went on a 16-2 run over the next five minutes to take a four-point lead at 41-37. The contest was tight the rest of the way, as neither team enjoyed more than a six-point advantage over the final 15 minutes. Detroit's last lead was 58-57 with 5:22 left to play. The Phoenix shot better than 50 percent for the game (27-for-51) to move over .500 in league play. Green Bay is next in action at home Thursday against Valparaiso at 7:05 p.m. It is Dick Bennett night, as the Green Bay Athletics Department honors its former coach. In addition, "Throwback Night" will feature ticket prices and concession stand prices that are rolled back to 1993, the last time that Green Bay and Valpo were in the same conference. --www.uwgbathletics.com-- |
