Feb. 7, 2008
GREEN BAY, Wis. - For the second year in a row, Green Bay men's basketball standout Mike Schachtner has been named as a member of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V First Team. The junior forward's accolade was voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Schachtner is now eligible to be considered for Academic All-America honors. Last season, Schachtner was tabbed to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team to go along with his first-team district mention. The Somerset, Wis., native has been outstanding on the basketball court as well as in the classroom. The preseason first-team All-Horizon League pick enters tonight's game ranked third in the conference and first on the team in scoring, averaging 17.4 points per contest. He has scored at least 20 points eight times already this season. On Jan. 12, Schachtner scored a season-high 34 points at Valparaiso while setting a school record for three-point percentage by going 7-for-7 from beyond the arc. The junior's success from three-point land ranks him second in the conference in three-point percentage (.483). In addition to his ability to score from outside, Schachtner has also been exceptional from the free throw line. He ranks in the top 20 nationally (19th) and first in the Horizon League in free throw percentage, making 88.2 percent of his attempts from the stripe. In the classroom, Schachtner holds a 3.81 grade-point average as a psychology major. Earlier this season, he was named the Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Month for November. He has also twice been honored as the Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Week this season, on Nov. 20 and again on Jan. 15. Schachtner is one of three Horizon League student-athletes on the five-player District V squad, joining a pair of Butler seniors, A.J. Graves and Drew Streicher. CoSIDA District V covers schools in the states of Wisconsin, Indiana, Minnesota and Illinois as well as the Canadian province of Ontario. --www.uwgbathletics.com-- |
