Feb. 26, 2008
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Green Bay junior Mike Schachtner was named to the Academic All-America Second Team on Tuesday, giving him University Division (Division I) ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America recognition from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for the second consecutive year. He is the second Phoenix player ever to be honored multiple times, joining Tony Bennett (1991, 1992). Schachtner leads the Horizon League and ranks among the nation's top 10 with a .901 free throw percentage, part of his stat line that includes a 15.7 points-per-game scoring rate that ranks third in the League. The Somerset, Wis., native also stands third on the League's 3-point accuracy charts with a .471 clip behind the arc. He is one of only two players ranked among the League's top 10 in all three shooting-percentage categories. The 6-foot-9 forward also sits among the conference's top 20 in rebounding at 4.5 boards per game. Schachtner scored 34 points versus Valparaiso on Jan. 12, one of eight games in which he has tallied 20 or more points this season. Schachtner's academic résumé includes a 3.81 grade-point average as a psychology major. In 2006-07, he was an Academic All-Horizon League selection and also was a first-team academic all-district and third-team Academic All-America choice. This year, Schachtner was named the League's Scholar-Athlete of the Month for November and has twice been voted the League's Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Butler seniors A.J. Graves and Drew Streicher were also selected, making the Horizon League the only Division I conference with three players recognized.
