APPLETON, Wis. - The Green Bay men's tennis team picked up its first Horizon League victory of the season Saturday with a key 5-2 win over Valparaiso at the Fox Cities Racquet Club.

Green Bay edged the Crusaders in the closely contested dual, as four singles matches went three sets, including three with tie-breaker sets. All three doubles matches went down to the wire.

The Phoenix took the first point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Tim Prudlow and Mark Goldin paired for an 8-6 win at the top spot, while Matt Keesey and Matt Clegg posted a key 9-8 (6) win at No. 2 doubles.

In singles action, Clegg led the way with a solid 6-1, 6-2 straight-set win at No. 3 singles. Eric Plaushines followed with a straight-set win at No. 6 singles, but he needed a tie-break in the second set for the point.

Plaushines' win was a sign of how close the remainder of the singles matches would be. Goldin and Keesey rallied for third-set victories at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Prudlow and Brian Zaron also battled in three sets, both suffering tie-breaking losses at one point in their matches.

Green Bay is back in action April 9 at non-conference and instate foe Marquette.
