Women's Basketball Clinches Share of League Title With 78-60 Win Over UIC
Feb. 21, 2008
CHICAGO - The Green Bay women's basketball team (21-4, 13-1) secured at least a share of the 2008 Horizon League regular season title Thursday night with its 78-60 victory over UIC at the UIC Pavilion. Senior guard Kayla Groh surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for her career with her game-high 24 points, which also matched her career-best effort set earlier this season. Also notching a career-high was freshman Kayla Tetschlag, who tallied 15 points in a career-high 29 minutes thanks to a perfect 6-of-6 shooting from the field. Rachel Porath and Erin Templin also scored in double figures with 15 and 11 points, respectively. The two teams swapped six leads early in the first half as Templin had nine of Green Bay's first 11 points of the game. The Phoenix then went on a 13-0 run late in the first half to secure a 38-23 lead at the break. Groh scored eight straight points during the run, and with her baseline three-pointer with 2:32 left in the first half, she became the 24th player in Green Bay history to score 1,000 career points. While Green Bay shot an uncharacteristic 37.5 percent from the field in the first half, the Phoenix defense stymied UIC into a 9-of-33 mark in the first 20 minutes for 27.3 percent. The Flames tried to cut into Green Bay's lead in the second half, and with a trio of Jessie Miller three-pointers, UIC was within nine, 46-37. But Green Bay took control the rest of the way, taking as much as a 22-point lead with just over five minutes to play. Green Bay finished with a 40-34 rebounds advantage and had 11 turnovers to a season-high 23 assists. UIC (8-16, 4-9) was led by Miller's 15 points while Briana Hinkle tallied 12 points for the Flames. Green Bay has four games left to secure home court advantage in the Horizon League Championship March 10-16, starting Saturday at Loyola. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. |
