Groh's 23-Point Effort on Senior Day Lifts Green Bay over Detroit, 71-51

Complete Release in PDF Format GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Green Bay women's basketball team (25-4, 17-1) celebrated Senior Day in grand fashion Saturday, as Kayla Groh led all scorers with 23 points in Green Bay's 71-51 win over Detroit. Groh, Green Bay's lone senior, shot 10-of-13 from the field on her way to her sixth 20-point game of her career. Lavesa Glover added 19 points, including 10 of Green Bay's first 17 points of the contest, as the only other player for Green Bay in double figures. Junior Erin Templin was within range of a triple-double with a game-high 10 rebounds along with nine points and a career-best seven assists. Detroit (6-23, 3-15) had a brief 3-2 lead early on before Green Bay kicked it into overdrive. The Phoenix scored 11 straight points to take a 15-3 lead, which would never dip below double figures the rest of the way. Green Bay's largest lead of the first half was 39-18 with 1:30 to go thanks to 10 straight Phoenix points by Groh, capped by a natural three-point play. The Phoenix built its lead to as much as 29 points in the second half. Green Bay cruised the rest of the way before finishing with the 20-point victory. Green Bay finished the game shooting 53.8 percent from the field and tallying 20 assists. The Phoenix set a Horizon League record with 17 league wins after tying the previous best of 16 victories last season with its unblemished 16-0 record. Green Bay heads to the 2008 Horizon League Championship next week with home court advantage. The Phoenix awaits the winner of the No. 8 UIC-No. 9 Loyola first round game and will host a quarterfinal contest against the winner Wednesday, March 12 at 7 p.m. |
