Phoenix Softball Returns to Action but Falls to Detroit
April 19, 2008
DETROIT -- The Green Bay softball team (6-17, 0-7) dropped a pair of games in Saturday afternoon's doubleheader against Detroit (9-20, 3-7) by scores of 1-0, and 8-5, respectively. The Phoenix could not overcome the Titans' pitching during the two games, going a combined 10 innings before notching its first run. In the opener, pitcher Anna Bluemel threw six strong innings, giving up only one run on four hits. The only score came in the third after Detroit's Jessica Leibner led off by reaching on a Jenna Woepse error. The next two batters sacrificed Leibner to third, and she later scored on a Kristen Sclater single with two outs. The Phoenix was able to outhit the Titans 5-4, but could not manage to convert its opportunities. The closest chance came in the fifth, when Green Bay had a runner thrown out at home plate. Vanessa Lefan was the only Green Bay player to muster two hits in the game. Amanda Margelofsky took the hill for the Phoenix in the second game, and was only able to last two-plus innings, as she gave up five runs (two earned) while allowing six hits. Detroit jumped on Green Bay early in the second game, scoring four runs in the first inning off two Phoenix errors. The Titans added another run in the third on a Breanna Sesoko solo home run off Margelofsky. Green Bay closed the gap to 5-2 in the fourth after an RBI single by Samantha Howe. Mollie Kaebisch scored the other run in the inning when Howe attempted to steal second, and proceeded to get in a run-down, which allowed Kaebisch to swipe home plate. The Phoenix would get no closer than three runs the rest of the game, as Detroit plated a trio of runs in the bottom of the fourth off reliever Andi Pigeon. Both teams had 11 hits on the day, as Howe and Leah Korger tallied three apiece. Green Bay concludes the three-game series with the Titans Sunday, at 10 a.m. (CT) at Detroit. --www.uwgbathletics.com-- |
