Softball Bats Held in Check in Sweep at Wisconsin
April 23, 2008
MADISON, Wis. -- The Green Bay softball team (6-20) struggled to get the bats going with a combined four hits in the double header and lost both games against in-state rival Wisconsin (14-37). The Phoenix took a 6-1 loss in the opener and a 4-1 defeat in the second game of the twinbill. In the first game, the Phoenix was able to keep it close early on. Green Bay tied the game at 1-1 in the third after Melani Niederer singled to lead off the inning, and eventually scored on an error by shortstop Lynn Anderson. Niederer and Jenna Woepse were the only Phoenix players to get a hit in the contest. The Badgers were able to notch the go-ahead run in the fourth on a solo home run by Anderson. Wisconsin added two runs off starting pitcher Anna Bluemel in both the fifth and sixth innings. Bluemel surrendered six runs (four earned), and 10 hits in six innings of work to fall to 4-9 on the season. Wisconsin jumped on the Phoenix early in the second game by scoring a run in the first inning, and by adding two more in the third inning. Starting pitcher Andrea Pigeon went four innings, giving up four runs on six hits. Reliever Samantha Schmeltzer pitched the final two innings and allowed only one hit. Green Bay was able to draw to within two in the fourth inning after Sara Junion scored on a Mollie Kaebisch single. Two runs was the closest the Phoenix would get, as Anderson homered again in the bottom half of the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Junion and Kaebisch were the only two Phoenix players with hits in the second game. The Phoenix returns to action Saturday as it hosts Butler in a Horizon League double header. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., and it will be Green Bay's home opener after 26 road contests. --www.uwgbathletics.com-- |
