Phoenix Softball Sweeps Butler in Home Debut Double Header
April 27, 2008
GREEN BAY, Wis. - Green Bay (8-20, 2-8 HL) scratched out a pair of victories over Butler (16-27, 5-12) Sunday afternoon in the long-awaited home debut for the Phoenix. Green Bay picked up a 3-2 victory in 10 innings in the opener, then posted a 4-2 triumph in game two. In the morning tilt, Sara Junion stroked a double down the left field line that drove in Dana Brockman with two outs in the bottom of 10th as the Phoenix snapped a 12-game losing streak. Junion was 2 for 5 with two RBIs to lead the offense. Anna Bluemel (5-9) picked up her team-leading fifth victory of the year by going the distance, yielding just two runs on eight hits over 10 innings. Both runs came in the top of the seventh, as Butler's Amy Hyerczyk laced a two-out 0-2 pitch into center field for a two-run single that forced extra innings. After 5 ½ scoreless frames, Green Bay broke through for two in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a single and a pair of doubles. The Green Bay bats exploded to open the second game, as five of the first six batters reached base and three runs crossed the plate in the first. Krissy Hanson posted her second of three triples on the day to drive home leadoff hitter Jenna Woepse, and Junion followed with a two-bagger as the Phoenix jumped out to a 2-0 lead after just three batters. Amanda Margelofsky (1-7) earned her first victory of the season as she scattered 12 hits, allowing just two runs in a complete game effort. Butler closed to within two (4-2) with a run in the top of the seventh, but with a runner on second and two outs, Junion made a diving catch in center field to end the contest. Green Bay had its first six home games canceled due to inclement weather. The team closes the home portion of its schedule next weekend with a three-game series against league foe Youngstown State beginning Saturday. The Phoenix travels to Minnesota to play a double header with the Gophers on Wednesday. --www.uwgbathletics.com-- |
